jeff bad backlight strip. Remove your power cord, then remove the back panel. The backlight is in behind the panel and since this is a Vizio, repair manuals are not easy to come up. You’ll have to experiment or check youtube to see if you find a Vizio backlight repair. This video should help you out and this one is a general one on how to replace the backlight strip.
The Visio Support site helped me (via a google search). Do this before taking the extreme measures of opening up the unit: Using the Visio remote, press the Menu button, then System>Reset & Admin>Soft Power Cycle>Yes. 20 seconds later I was good to go. If you don’t have the Soft Power Cycle feature on your unit, you can unplug the unit from its power source, then press the TV’s power button on the side for 3 seconds, plug the cord back into the power source, then turn on the TV. If this doesn’t work, there are other steps which were unnecessary for me.
I tried these things (Unplug, reboot tv) & it didn’t work. Tried using my TV remote & watching from a different input besides cable tv, and it worked fine. No dark upper area. That told me that my cable was the issue. Rebooted my cable box per directions online and it fixed the issue.
