I don’t know what to call this, and have thus far had no luck googling an answer. Ideally, I’d have a small meter that would plug in to a female RJ45 wall jack. It would give me a green light (or whatever) to indicate that there was an active network available. There must be a tool that does this? What’s it called and where can I find one? Thanks.

if you are just looking for “hot” ports, where a router or switch is already in place, you just need something like this: http://www.frys.com/product/3824317?site… We use a spare IP phone where I work…

What you’re looking for is a Network Testing Device. I’m not sure what the price for such a device is, but I can guarantee you that it does the job. The tool that I’ve used in the past is a Fluke LinkRunner. Keep in mind this is a professional model, but there should be similar devices available.

Something like this http://is.gd/4Yvek is probably a little more cost effective if it is just for hobby purposes - A Laptop would also suffice ;)

Bruce and David, Hey, does that device have a mac address? or does it grab a dhcp address if available? Ken

I’m still here but haven’t asked or answered anything! I just use a laptop to see if there’s a connection.

u can use wireshark or Mot tester with sensor for activity

I use one of these, but it only test 10/100 lines not 1000 Mbps lines. https://www.amazon.com/Smartronix-Linkch… Back in the day, I’ve made a few testers out of these as well. Soldered a push button and a battery inside. https://www.revamp-it.ch/index.php/en/sh
