I have a 21.5" 2013 iMac. I replaced the HDD.can see the screen only I when I hold up a torch. There is no backlight. I did this very carefully. Not broken wires, nothing. There’s just no light.
Hook it up to an external monitor to see if it’s generating a video signal. I’d also recheck all the video connectors.
