Can the metal end on the side which the slider is attached, be replaced? It holds the other straight end of the zipper to prevent separating of the zipper.

Use a small safety pin. If the little loop of the zipper end is still there you can use a small safety pin put it through the loop and close it it will work just like the zipper end that came on it.
