This is a pretty old phone, a samsung slide phone from 2008 or so, but it’s worked beautifully for me. Now the screen fills with white light as soon as the phone comes on. It still receives texts (which I can’t read) and I can place calls by dialing the numbers, but since I can’t see anything I can’t access my contacts. I don’t see a sim card when I open the back, but possibly there is one inside the base of the phone, which could be opened with a tiny screwdriver. Does anyone know if, and how, I might access my contacts?

Unless you manage to fix the LCD, the only way (that I could think of) is to hope that your contacts are saved onto the SIM card in the bottom (if there even is one). Find a working phone that accepts the same size of SIM, insert the SIM and then hope for the best and open contacts. If they’re not there, they’re stored on your phone, and you either have to fix the screen or find a manual or video or something that shows the process of transferring contacts to the SIM and follow the instructions blindly, hoping nothing goes wrong.
