My Dad’s Mac stopped working some time ago and he took it to a repair place who said it’s &&^&@@, they can’t recover any of the data and he should get a new one, I have a feeling they lied to him so I want to know how to fix the gpu as he has stated the screen keeps showing a big line down the middle which is a graphics issue. If it cannot be fixed I would like to know if there is a way to possibly recover the data from the hard drive or just use your tutorial to remove the drive and get the data out that way. I have a picture of the screen to show what’s going on
Without seeing a picture of what you see I can only guess. A line on the screen tends to be a LCD failure not a GPU issue. Did someone bang or drop the system, or try opening the system without using the correct tools and technique? See if you can plug in an external monitor does the external display show the desktop cleanly? If your dad wants to salvage the data from the drive that is possible! I’m going to assume you have a HDD in the system. All you’ll need is a [linked product missing or disabled: IF107-108-1] as you’re drive is a 3.5” you need the power connection. Then all you’ll need to do is connect it to another mac system to copy off the data. If your dad has the SSD blade model you’ll need a special SSD case: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Storage Enclosure for select Apple Flash SSDs from most 2013 to 2015 Mac Models To take the display off properly you’ll need to follow this guide iMac Intel 27" EMC 2639 Display Replacement and you’ll also need this tool iMac Opening Wheel and at least two sets of these Plastic Cards If you decide to put the system back together you’ll also want the get the adhesive tapes as well [linked product missing or disabled: IF174-005-1] the kit comes with the tool.
