The display stopped working one day. It went through some stages of flicking back on for a period of time, but irregularly not working when I went to use it. There seemed to be no cause or fix to symptoms. The screen still registered touches to input the passcode and use the shutter, etc. After about 3 days of these symptoms, the display stopped working and never turned back on. I bought a replacement screen and did the job myself, with no improvement. At this stage I took it to a repair shop, where I suspect they simply did exactly what I did but I was told that it was not repairable and completely unresponsive. I turned it on and commanded Siri to call somebody to show that the phone was still operational. There were sounds from the phone indicating that I could enter my passcode, click the shutter button and open apps etc. I have now noticed that the power has begun to cut out and the power cycles if on charge. It simply turns off if not on charge. Could anyone please give me some advice on what I can try to do?

I believe your iPhone has a failed display circuit, or failed backlight circuit. Both are usually repairable by someone who can perform microsoldering repairs. Find someone - reputed - who does and take it to them or mail it to them. We do them all they, they are usually pretty straightforward unless there is (extensive) water damage inside.
