Chosen Solution
Hello, I will be installing a second SSD drive in an optical drive tray, but before I do, I have a doubt: where should I install the temperature sensor, on the tray itself or on the SSD? In this video the guy says it is better to install it on the tray because the SSD can get warmer (it is on 16:34): https://youtu.be/qVvy6GgtGRE?t=994 But i lose the monitoring in this case. Do you have any suggestions or advices? Thanks in advance, Viktor
Your system has three SATA ports! The first is servicing your HDD, the second the optical drive and a third which is unused (spare). Apple sold the system with a SSD as a premium config back in the day. Now I don’t recommend using the optical drive port in this series as its only a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) Vs the HDD and Spare SATA ports which are SATA III (6.0 Gb/s). The better solution is to follow this guide Installing iMac Intel 21.5" EMC 2428 Dual Drive Kit instead. As far as a thermal sensor the SSD really doesn’t need it. As SSD’s run a lot cooler than the mechanical HDD or Optical Drive. But, if you use the Optical Drive bay you do need to leave it plugged in as the system needs the input. The thermal sensor was only needed for the optical drive. Just place it some where on the SSD directly.
