Hi I was increasing the space on my late 2013 15” rMBP using the long Sintech adapter and a Samsung 970 Evo (Samsung MZ-V7E1T0BW 970 EVO 1 TB V-NAND M.2 PCI Express) but the link width is only showing as x2 and it seems to be running slow.
I tried SMC reset, format & reinstall Mojave, take it out and make sure its sitting in the adapter and connector right but still no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, Bryan
If anyone has the same problem. Make sure theres no pins exposed before the gold pins. The tape to cover those pins had shifted on mine exposing the pins. I put a small piece of Kapton tape on the front to cover all the pins and now it works perfectly.
Well you found another good reason to stick with a real Apple SSD, Sorry ;-{ Here’s a good guide on the custom SSD’s The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs Here’s your options Apple custom SSD: BeetTech - 1TB SSD PCIe 2.0 x4 interfaceBeetTech - 1TB SSD PCIe 3.0 x4 interface OWC Aura N 1.0TB NVMe SSD PCIe 3.1 x2, NVMe 1.2Aura Pro X2 1.0TB NVMe SSD PCIe 3.1 x4, NVMe 1.3 Transcend JetDrive 820JetDrive 850
Bryan I just upgraded my 2017 MacBook Air 128GB SSD with the Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB SSD. Installation seemed just fine. Performance was weird. The NVMe specs in the “About this Mac” show “x2” links versus “x4” links in my wife’s identical MacBook Air 128 GB laptop (unmodified). Blackmagic shows her Apple SSD “Read” performance is twice my EVO performance — seemed to correlate with the link numbers. So I searched and found your similar finding. Not sure I understood the possible fix, however. I didn’t understand the description of the piece of tape that covers some pins? All pins in both my long Sintech Adapter Card and the EVO SSD are gold and I got confused about “before the gold pins”. I would very much like to get clear on this and try the fix. Help! Thanks so much for writing about this issue. John
