Hello there, I recently bought a optical frame for my MacBook Pro early 2011. I replaced my disk drive with the frame and installed a Samsung ssd 256gb (evo 840) so I’m having two ssd’s in one Mac at the moment. But it’s not working as I want it to! It’s acting incredible slow (3/4 hours for writing 5 GB) from the main ssd to the ssd in the frame. I have checked for mistakes and been cleaning the connecting parts between the frame and the computer without any luck. Anyone know what I have to do next?
You’er hitting a known issue! Your MacBook Pro does not support SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drives in the optical drive. You need a fixed speed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive. Sadly, auto sense drives like the Samsung SSD won’t work here as well as the drive can’t sync up with the ports SATA speed. Review the MacBookPro8,1 Red notation at the bottom of this OWC document OWC Data Doubler. To be clear this is not a carrier issue, it’s a MacBook Pro logic board issue in this series as the PCH optical SATA port can’t handle the clocking it’s running at.
