Chosen Solution
Hello. I’m kind of new here, and not TOO knowledgable but I try to give it a shot, and want to see if this is within my league or not. So, a friend of mine spilled liquid on her mid 2012 MB Pro. Coffe with sugar and cream, apparently. I’m not sure if right at the moment or later, but it died, no charging light nor power. Stored it on a shelf for around 2 months until I asked for it to give a look to it. After opening it, it was a mess. Logic board, fan and overall it was sticky. Some mild corrosion at the top of the logic board. Here’s the before:
Did the usual, isopropyl alcohol + toothbrush. Managed to clean it up nicely and remove most if not all corrosion. Plugged the battery back again, connected it and the Magsafe LED lights up correctly, as well as the battery level indicator on the side. But no power. Tried shorting the power pads, no luck. Then I noticed that there’s something blown up. I have no idea what it is:
So. What do you guys thing, is the blown thing related to the lack of power? Am I not shorting the pads properly? Is this repairable? Thanks a lot.
Hard to tell, as you said it looks the board was a big mess and nobody can tell how many components might be involved without testing. The burnt IC is probably the thunderbolt controller, but it sits right beside the power/charging IC and I have doubts replacing that would be sufficient to get the board back functioning. If you decide you really want to try and fix it be ready to invest quite some time on it..
