My mother in law has a iPhone 5c which randomly switches off when receiving a call. The only way to get it back on is to plug in. I’ve read lots on the net about it possibly being a software problem and not the battery. I have backed up in to I cloud just now and got her to set up a I tunes account which we also backed up on. So anyway I want to do a DFU restore but I can’t get a simple clear answer to my question. My question being: will I lose her photos if I do a dfu restore or will the data be in I cloud/iTunes?? Cheers

Has the battery or screen been replaced before? Can you test it and see if it happens while the phone is plugged into charger? Sounds like a bad battery to me. Just backup the iPhone to iTunes using the iTunes backup function there then you are safe to do a DFU restore / normal mode restore via iTunes works too. Then restore the iTunes backup for the iPhone 5C and all the photos, contacts, settings will be there. Apps you will need to transfer app purchases to iTunes which requires the iTunes Apple ID that is currently being used on that phone.

When you plug in the iPhone, what does it show? You can plug in the iphone to the computer and check what mode is that.
