Hello, This is due to failure of one or more of your shift bushings. They are small round plastic bushings that allow for smooth and quiet operation of the shifter, when they are all intact. I will be writing a guide for replacement of these in the future but for now hopefully it is helpful to know what the problem is. If you search Google for w123 shift bushing replacement you will find a lot of info.
