Hey guys. Just used the upper case replacement guide to clean and check for dust and some old coffee accident traces, all worked fine and easy, but since then my optical drive started to act like crazy. After a while i discovered that i maybe have tighten the whole thing a bit too much. Loosing up on the down side and a bit on the sides already helped a bit, but not quite as it was before. It still has a few strange sounds and sometimes spits out the disk. Maybe i put too much force by putting the upper case back in its place? Can it be slightly bent? Thanks a lot for any info.
Maybe. Have you checked if you somehow moved the DVD? Furthermore, I must add my DVD SuperDrive acted up even before I had a new uppercase ordered (with the local layout) to replace my badly dented one, and I solved the issue draping a glass-cleaning cloth on my Credit Card and moving it in the assembly, and then using a CD Lens Cleaner (the Music CD, not the DVD movie). It was inexpensive, and fixed the issue, even if I must clean my DVD at least every two months to avoid it refusing to read my CD and/or spitting them off.
Also, check the little gray plastic retainers which easily slide out of their slots. I could not get a cd in, so I took the top off again and discovered that this was the problem. Update As a matter of fact, I discovered that, unlike the Wallstreet, Pismo and ibooks I have owned, none of the case screws can be tightened on the Macbook a1181 as tightly. I discovered this last evening after installing the top when repositioning the plastic retainers. The machine acted dead would not charge or even recognize the battery. I loosened all bottom screws and the four in the back and now it works as it should. Kind of puzzles me, because I am very careful about the amount of tension I apply.
