Replaced the screen, and while the phone responds to the computer, the screen is completely black (nothing on the screen, even when shining a light at the screen).

Have you tried to reconnect the original screen (if it’s still functional)? Make sure all the connections are seated properly. Also, try another display. It sounds like you may have gotten a bad part in.

DOA display. Second one works fine.
