All of a sudden the display of my MBP does not work properly anymore. The computer powers up ok, but the display stays dark with a thin white line at the bottom of the display. The white Apple logo is lit. I can connect an external display, like my iMac27, and operate the MBP from its own keyboard and trackpad; all seems to work well except the screen. I have tried PRAM and SMC resets, but without success. Grateful for any advice folks can give me.

Most likely your display is gone. Often someone sits or drops something onto the lid breaking it. To double check things here you’ll need to plug in an external display via the DisplayPort connection Vs sharing of the screen with your iMac. If the DisplayPort connection fails then the onboard GPU chip is gone Vs the display its self. Update (08/17/2016) Here’s the IFIXIT guide to replace the display assembly: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2010 Display Replacement. If you jump to Step 8 you can see the displays connector. Is the connector fully seated? Also do you see any corrosion or other damage in the area?
