Hi All you smart people in here. I am considering upgrading my HDD with a larger SSD. my plan is to use the old HDD as a second drive instead of the optical drive with the iFixit “Unibody Laptop Dual Drive - Upgrade Kit” Is it possible to use the Second drive as an OSdrive for windows or OSX (i’m currently slitting my HDD in 2 with boot camp). How sock absorbent is the Hard Drive Enclosure from iFixit? Would it be better to install the SSD in the enclosure and run OSX from it? When I do the HDD cloning will it clone the boot camp as well? I appreciate any help i can get.

We no longer do the dual drive setup. Instead we use a SSHD (hybrid drive). Thats not to say it can’t be done only we found the wear & performance issues plus the costs didn’t work out in the long run. First, the SATA port of the optical drive is much slower than the HD port so depending on what you put into the carrier you could have some speed compatibility issues. Second, Apples HD’s don’t have crash protection within the drive. So you will need to be careful not to bang your system when its on if you move it over. If you are using your laptop as a desktop then this issue is moot. We use Seagates’ SSHD we have well over 100 in the field and we use Boot Camp with them.
