Our ‘pretty old’ Miele vacuum cleaner (its model C3 not the one above but I don’t know how add a model to the lookup table above) ratchet that rewinds the power cable when you press the RHS ‘comfort’ button stopped working a few days ago in that it wouldn’t lock when you pulled yards of cable out, just kept rewinding it back in. I’d done a ‘work around’ with a piece of wood to stop it. Now yesterday it pulled out a short way and has locked altogether and is just stuck. Looked on YouTube and was amazed to see how big the plastic wheel is inside that controls the power cable rewind function. At 74 with Rheumatoid Arthritis I don’t think I’m capable of taking the hoover apart to try and fix and no doubt Miele will want the price of 2 new vacuum cleaners to repair it! Other than use a long extension lead and carry it round the house I can’t think of anything better - any ideas please? Dennis - Sheffield UK

Thanks - much better than any of my attempts (this is the guy who’s wife asked him to buy her an Electric drill for Xmas - I have a lifetime ban on doing DIY or using Superglue!). Initially the only problem was the power lead wouldn’t stay and kept rewinding itself - my first solution was to pull the whole lead out, loop the last bit around a short piece of wood to stop it retracting. This has worked well until 2 days ago when the power lead pulled out about 4 feet and then decided to lock itself so it neither pulls out or retracts now! Not to be defeated I have one of those reel extension leads so I’ve plugged the Miele into that. My next project (unknown to my wife) is to find some way to make it so the extension lead drum can be mounted on something so it can be dragged along or even find a portable extension lead/drum that comes with castors already on. I’m based in Sheffield (S11) - there is a Miele Showroom about ¹/₂ mile from my house!! P.S. although totally inept in the DIY department I’m an Ordinary Member of The London Mathematical Society (2016)!!
