The wires on my charger for my MacBook recently broke so I rewired it to fix it. Upon pluggining it in to charge I realised smoke coming from between the charging adapter and the port on the laptop. I then realised that I had accidentally reversed the polarity of the charger when I reconnected the wires. I corrected the wires and tried to charge it again. It still did not charge the laptop (led on charger didn’t turn on). Wondering if I have fried the laptop or just the charger and what I need to repair. Laptop battery lights on side of laptop still work as seen in photo provided
If you are lucky it just got burnt the first barrier, the DC-in board. You could remove the logic board and inspect at least the DC-in board for burnt components, in case you find something charred get a replacement to begin with. Maybe charger got fried too, although it’s a pretty robust part when polarity is reversed one never knows. If you have a least a multimeter you could do some basic testing for voltage or you’ll have to get a known good charger to proceed further in troubleshooting. Once you have a known good charger and DC-in board, reassess for potential further damage..without them anything may or may not be.
