Followed the guide. Could I have possibly not got the solder connections correctly soldered?
That is possible, you can check that with a multimeter. It is also possible that the battery has discharged below the threshold that a USB port can charge it. Try to keep it charging on a AC charger. Check your dock connector and make sure it is clean and does not have any broken or bend or corroded pins. try a different cable as well.
