I am wondering if it would be possible to upgrade my Early 2011 Macbook Pros logic board to a mid 2012 or late 2011 i7 logic board. Has anyone done this with positive results? Would it be a good idea? Many thanks in advance.
Yes, you can upgrade your Macbook with a later logic board from 2012, i5 or i7 would both be suitable. It’s a good choice in my opinion as 2012 boards are ready for upgrade to Mojave and its new graphics requirements and that will increase the value of your Mac irrespective if you’re interested in updating it or not. Just make sure the new board comes with the relevant heat sink as that part differs from your present one.
The main problem you may run into is the display cable differing. Neither display is listed as cross compatible. Check that out thoroughly before attempting this process.
If you wish to do this here is the guide: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Early 2011 Logic Board Replacement But, you would have a little hard time without the tools listed in the guide. If you are willing to take the risk of damaging your device, go ahead! And, with the mid 2012, I believe that it isn’t compatible with the 2011’s. I’m not positive on that though.
