Apple iMac “Core 2 Duo” 2.4 24-Inch (Al) Specs Identifiers: Mid-2007 - 24" - MA878LL - iMac7,1 - A1225 - 2134 The HDD on my iMac died. Your replacement guide states to replace with a 3 1/2" HDD but the drive I removed is a 5 1/4". What gives. Does this mean different hardware to mount this 3-1/2"? Does it Have to be a WD. I just happen to have a 3-1/2" Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500gb drive sitting here. Can I use this drive in my iMac. I noticed yesterday it does not appear to support S.M.A.R.T. I hooked it up to my MBP to check it out and erase it. To prep for install to the iMac. Main question is 5-1/4" to 3-1/2" replacement. Thank You

The hard drive that comes in your model actually measures 5 3/4 " x 4" x 1". It is called a half height drive or a 3.5" drive. The reason comes form early hard drives that were very large. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_d… The standard laptop drive is called a 2.5" drive, and actually measures 2.75 in × 0.275–0.59 in × 3.945. UPDATE Here’s how to install your hard drive, I would install it and use your original system installation DVD to format it, you can then use Migration assistant to transfer the data from your laptop via Target Mode: iMac Intel 24" EMC 2134 and 2211 Hard Drive Replacement

You can almost always switch from a 5 1/2 to a 3 1/2, but, depending on the application, often times you will need an adapter like this one here. As you can see they are quite inexpensive. Good luck!
