My GE Refrigerator works now. It had been acting up. That is in the top(Freezer part). The bottom part which is the refrigerator is more like lukewarm. I can’t keep milk or anything in it There is a ice buildup underneath the freezer on each end of the bottom of it. The refrigerator is warm and the freezer is cold. What can I check?
Hi, What is the model number of the refrigerator? Can you hear if the evaporator fan in the freezer is running? (it is inside the freezer compartment behind a panel) The fan will stop if a door is opened (either fridge or freezer) and will start again when the doors are shut. You may have to place an ear against the fridge to hear it ;-) If you cannot hear the fan and since you say there is ice build up in the freezer it may be that the fan is iced up due to problems with the auto defrost. This prevents cold air being blown into the refrigerator section to it cool down to the required temp. You may have a problem with the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat or hopefully not the control board. You could try turning off the power to the fridge and then leaving it off for 12-24 hours until the ice melts in the freezer section and then turn it back on again and check if the refrigerator section cools down to the correct temperature or not. (check if you can now hear the evaporator fan running in the freezer section) It will take a while to get down to the correct temp. I realize that this is not a good test option if you have frozen food to keep. If it does work correctly (for a while at least until it ices up again) you can then start checking the possible causes mentioned above
